When You Don’t Have the Words

Finding God in the silence

There are moments in life when prayer feels easy. Words flow, faith feels strong, and hope seems near.

But there are also moments when life feels heavy. Moments when the weight of circumstances, grief, uncertainty, or exhaustion leaves us feeling empty. In those seasons, we may sit down to pray and realise something surprising:

We don’t have the words.

Perhaps you’ve been there before or, you're there right now.

You want to pray, but nothing comes out. Your heart is tired. Your mind is overwhelmed. Your soul feels quiet.

If that is you today, take comfort in this truth:

God understands the prayers we cannot put into words.

God Hears the Prayers of the Heart

The Bible reminds us that prayer is not about perfect sentences or polished language. It is about relationship.

In Romans 8:26, we are given a beautiful promise:

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

What does “wordless groans” mean?

Wordless groans are prayers that are deeper than words.
They are the cries of the heart when we are too overwhelmed, broken, confused, or exhausted to form sentences.

They can look like:

Sighing deeply

Crying before God

Sitting silently in His presence

Feeling a heavy ache in your spirit

Saying something simple like “Lord…” but not finishing the sentence

In those moments, the Holy Spirit understands what your heart is trying to say.

Even when we cannot form a prayer, God’s Spirit is praying on our behalf.

Your silence is not a failure.
Your quiet tears are not ignored.
Your sighs, your heaviness, your longing, God hears it all.

When All You Can Do Is Sit With God

Sometimes the most honest prayer is simply being present with God.

You don’t have to impress Him.
You don’t have to explain everything.

You can simply say:

“Lord, I’m tired.”
“God, I don’t understand.”
“Help me.”

Even those few words are enough.

Throughout the Bible we see people coming to God in raw honesty, David in the Psalms, Hannah pouring out her heart in the temple, Elijah crying out in exhaustion.

God did not reject them.

And He will not reject you.

Let Scripture Speak For You

When our own words fail, Scripture can become our prayer.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is open the Bible and read slowly, allowing God’s Word to carry the prayer for us.

So, where do we start?

Start with the Psalms (Prayers of the Heart)

The Book of Psalms is one of the best places to begin because it contains raw, honest prayers. David and others expressed joy, fear, grief, anger, and hope, exactly what many of us feel.

Good Psalms to start with:

Psalm 23 – When you need peace and reassurance
“The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.”

Psalm 34 – When you feel broken or overwhelmed
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”

Psalm 42 – When your soul feels tired
“Why, my soul, are you downcast?”

Psalm 121 – When you need help and protection
“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

You can simply read a Psalm slowly and turn it into prayer.

2. The Words of Jesus

Sometimes hearing Jesus’ own words brings comfort and clarity.

A beautiful place to start is:

Matthew 11:28–30 - “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

You can pause and pray:

“Jesus, I am weary.
I come to you today.
Please give me rest.”

3. When You Need Hope

If you need encouragement about the future:

Isaiah 40:28–31 - “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”

This passage reminds us that God strengthens the tired soul.

4. When You Don’t Know What to Pray

Read Romans 8 slowly.

It talks about:

The Holy Spirit helping us

God working things for good

Nothing separating us from God’s love

It’s one of the most comforting chapters in the Bible.

A Simple Way to Do It:

Open the Bible.

Read one verse slowly.

Pause.

Turn the verse into a short prayer.

Verses like these can become quiet prayers:

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28

When life feels heavy, these words remind us that we are not alone.

God Is Near in the Quiet

Prayer is not measured by the number of words we say.

If you are in a season where prayer feels difficult, take heart:

God is not distant.
God is not disappointed in you.
God is near.

And even when you cannot find the words,

He still hears your heart.

“The Lord is near to all who call on him.” — Psalm 145:18
